How often do you find yourself entering a home that looks just like the last one you visited? Your home has the opportunity to paint a picture of a distinctive style and culture that uniquely represents a part of you. Whether you are looking at Malaysian Walnut (also called Acacia), American Walnut, Brazilian Cherry, Tigerwood, Merbau or Bamboo, an exotic choice of wood flooring can make all the difference in individualizing your home.

Exotic wood flooring is very different from the domestic wood flooring that you traditionally see in Seattle and Bellevue area homes. Though it is picking up in popularity, exotic wood flooring is a unique way to set your home apart from the rest. When considering exotic wood flooring it is important to select the right wood flooring species to be used based on the purpose of the room. For example, Black Walnut (commonly referred to as American walnut) is a very soft wood, 1010 on the Janka scale, whereas the exotic species, Malaysian Walnut (Acacia), is two and a half times harder with a rating of aproximately 2300 . Mayalasian Walnut (Acacia) and other exotic wood flooring like Brazilian Cherry or Merbau would be suitable for a kitchen or hallway wood flooring because of the severe wear and tear these areas in the home are exposed to. Bamboo could also be used for wood flooring in these areas but consumers should understand that even though the top layer of Bamboo is very hard the layers underneath are very soft and will not provide much resistance if the top layer is punctured. Although most general Cherry wood species are not the hardest woods, the exotic Brazilian Cherry wood is one of the hardest woods- perfect for the main living area in a house. Other exotic wood floorings that aren’t rated as hard but equally as beautiful for Bellevue and Seattle homes include Merbau, Santos Mahogany and Autralian Cypress. Any of these exotic wood flooring choices would be more desirable for bedrooms or dining areas.

One thing to keep in mind is that even though harder woods are more resistant to denting and punctures, all wood flooring, exotic or not, will scratch under the wrong circumstances. The finish is what protects wood flooring. Oil based finishes hide scratches best as they scratch clear; however, they are much softer and tend to yellow over time. Water based finishes are becoming more popular in Bellevue and Seattle because they are less toxic than oil based finishes making them better for the environment. Water based finishes are also much harder and do not yellow overtime. With that said, water based finishes, which are typically used for prefinished flooring, do scratch white instead of the color of the wood. If protecting the look of your exotic wood flooring is your main concern, hand scraped versions of your exotic wood flooring is another option. The hand scraping takes on a weathered look so scratching is hidden in the style of the exotic wood floor. If you would rather stay with a traditional smooth finish then you will just need to take extra care (i.e. don’t wear shoes in the house) and learn tricks of the trade such as using permanent markers to color in scratches. Regardless of the finish you should always affix felt to the bottom of your furniture to prevent scratching of your exotic wood floor.
