Granite Countertops — Benefits?

WHAT IS GRANITE?

Granite is an igneous intrusive rock formed from cooling magma. When a rock is formed from cooling magma, it is described as igneous. When a rock is formed below the earth’s surface it is known as intrusive.

When granite forms deep within the earth’s crust, it combines with other rocks to give granite its many shades of color. Most commonly, granite is mixed with feldspar, mica and quartz crystals which also give the stone its “grainy” texture and look. Once the granite is smoothed and polished, it can be used in any home surface, but it is most commonly used in the kitchen and bathroom for the countertops and back splashes, fireplaces and entry floor.  Granite is also available in honed, antiqued and even flamed surfaces.

BENEFITS OF USING GRANITE SLAB COUNTEROPS?

Although many see granite slab countertops as an expensive alternative to Formica, granite is actually an affordable long term solution for homeowners. Granite is a sturdy home kitchen surface that will continue giving any kitchen or bathroom a luxurious touch. Granite can be found in many businesses at affordable prices. At Blackpebble Interiors, we are currently running a granite special for $49 sq/ft. If you are in the greater Bellevue/Seattle area please come take advantage of this great deal and visit us at our showroom in Bellevue. ( Please see further information below)

One of the main benefits of using a granite slab countertop is that granite comes is many varying colors and looks. The colors vary from light pink to black and can suit any home décor color palette. Style wise, the granite can have an even look where crystalline deposits are evenly spread throughout the stone, or it may have veins of white quartz weaving through the stone giving the granite a subtle pattern. When you finally choose a style or color of granite for a very large countertop that requires separate granite slabs, make sure the slabs come from the same deposit or the colors and style in the granite will vary.

Granite slab countertops also add a sense of elegance to any home kitchen. The smooth polished stone will enhance the grandeur of a kitchen and therefore, are very attractive to potential home buyers. A remodeled kitchen with granite slab countertops increases the value of a home, and is often seen as a better option for home buyers.  Many potential buyers prefer to buy a home that is already remodeled versus a home that needs to be updated on their own time.

Unlike tile countertops, where the grooves between the tiles slowly begin to color with age and use, and never seem to get as pristine as the day they were installed, a granite slab countertop is a much easier surface to maintain. Sealing granite is a very easy process in which the homeowner can use a cloth or a brush to apply three coats of sealant to the granite. This sealing process needs to be done at least once a year. Once the sealant is applied, the granite countertop is easy to wipe clean after a messy day in the kitchen.

Cool. So what’s a good alternative to granite/cheaper substitute?
