Travertine is a beautiful sand colored stone most commonly used for kitchen and bathroom flooring surfaces. Travertine mosaics make an backsplash look beautiful by adding interest and texture while bringing the beauty of natural stone. The surface of the stone is smooth and can be polished or honed.
HOW IS IT FORMED?
Travertine is formed in geothermal springs around the world. When in its purest form, travertine is a soft white color, but in most cases, the stone becomes contaminated with impurities that give the stone varying colors from soft beige to golden earthy tones.
In its natural form, travertine is a porous stone. When harvested and prepared for home installation, the holes are filled and finished with a polish. If left in its porous state, travertine is prone to collecting dust and becomes difficult to maintain. Most homeowners opt for a non-porous travertine stone.
HISTORY
The name travertine originates from the town Tivoli in Italy. Ancient Romans frequently utilized this stone in much of their countries architecture. The two most famously known travertine structures in Europe are the Colosseum in Rome, Italy and the Sacre-Coeur Basilica in Paris, France. WHY CHOOSE TRAVERTINE?
Travertine is a wonderful option to use in place of Granite or Marble in any home kitchen or bathroom. What makes this stone a better option is that travertine’s color palette is much softer than that of Granite or Marble. It gives a room a smooth spacious atmosphere. Also, travertine is an affordable solution for natural stone and can be purchased at a much lower price than Granite or Marble. However, it is important to remember to purchase a high quality travertine. Hardware stores will generally provide travertine at very low prices because their stock of travertine is in a low grade, low density form. The higher the density the better travertine will look once polished and installed.
At Blackpebble Interiors we offer a wide rage of travertine and provide excellent installation and design guidance.
